I’m fond of the Thalictrum family (Meadow Rue) generally and this charming little powder puff of a plant adds height and elegance during late summer.

It is tall (1.5m) and slender, never bulky and easy to fit in a narrow border. In fact, I think it is best where you can see it close up and appreciate the delicate nature of its little lilac blooms. Its flowering stem rises tall above delicate foliage which is aquilegia-like or even reminiscent of a maidenhair fern.

It can get buffeted about in the wind so I try and support mine discreetly. I have seen it growing out of blue and white agapanthus in Logan Botanic Gardens and here it is supported by the surrounding vegetation. It likes sun or dappled shade in deep, rich soil.
