June Plant of the Month

I’ve had this plant in my garden ever since we moved in back in the 1990s. Seedlings were transplanted from my parents garden in London where they grew in some of the hot spots, like at the base of an old concrete post for the washing line. Certainly made it more attractive!

Here, this plant thrives in my south facing, dry spot and adds an upright shape to the mid summer border. The border is mostly planted with blue, pale yellow and cream flowers so this plant, commonly known as pale yellow-eyed grass, fits in perfectly. Although it’s not a grass but a relative of the iris.

Sisyrinchium form a neat tufted clump of evergreen, sword-like leaves, grey green in colour. Slender spires of small, creamy pale yellow flowers rise above the leaves in June-July. Height 60cm, spread 25cm.

In spring, tidy away the blacked leaves and cut out the dead flower spikes. This plant will seed around where happy and can also be divided.
