December Plant of the Month
Nodding above my head on a sunny winter’s day, the flowers of Clematis Cirrhosa ‘Freckles’ were a cheery sight. Not a clematis I come across that often, so it made me think that I should take note and include it in a garden scheme in 2023.
An evergreen variety with nodding flowers and droopy foliage that flowers from November to February. ‘Freckles’ can reach heights of up to 12 feet and is happy to scramble up trees or fences without any pruning required. It needs shelter from heavy winds and a south or west facing position.
Bred by Raymond Evison and introduced in 1989, it is named after one of his daughters as she had plenty of freckles when she was a little girl. This clematis has the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, so it’s very reliable and extremely garden worthy.
