August Plant of the Month
Although included here in August, I could have added this one for June, July or September as that’s how long it’ll be flowering for.
I have mine in a large pot against the south facing house wall where it soaks up the sunshine and we can watch the many bees that visit it from our kitchen window. It gets a water when I’m watering my stock that gets stored on the driveway, but is generally pretty drought tolerant and has loved this hot, sunny summer. It’s native to SW Europe and N Africa.
This is a tree mallow with downy grey leaves and pale pink/lilac flowers with darker veining towards the centre and a purple eye. They can be short-lived, so I usually collect seed as insurance and will sow that in the spring. I have also had some success with soft wood cuttings taken in the spring, although they are slow to get going I find.
Semi-evergreen and bushy in habit to 1-1.5m high and wide.
