September Plant of the Month
Making an impression in my sunny border come late summer and into autumn is this decorative grass, Miscanthus ‘Cabaret’. It has sturdy foliage that is wider and more ribbon-like than most grasses and beautifully marked with cream central stripes. It’s never flowered for me, but the foliage alone makes up for that. It seems happy in this sunny, dry position and grows to about 1.8m high.
Although deciduous, the stems last long into the autumn until battered by stormy weather. I cut back any remaining foliage to ground level in February and it gradually gains height throughout the season. Hardy, easy and a good backdrop to a perennial border.
