October Plant of the Month
Flowering since I planted it in May, this little evergreen is a joy and will still be blooming in early November.
I usually plant it in rockeries and on slopes where it tumbles and spreads to about 30cm wide. Low growth to about 15cm high, so it’s also an excellent plant for edging a border.
My plant was surplus to requirements when planting up a garden in the spring, so it went into a terracotta pot by my front door where it’s just kept on flowering – lavender blue flowers with a white eye surrounded by purple blotches. An eye-catching colour combination.
A native of New Zealand, this bushy little subshrub usually flowers from April until August but deadhead the old flowers and it’ll keep on flowering, as my plant demonstrates beautifully. Of course, we’ve also had a mild October. It likes well-drained soil and sun or part shade. Trim after flowering to keep it compact.
