July Plant of the Month
A really lovely phlox that is beautifully fragrant with strong, compact growth to a height of 70-90cm.
Dark green foliage provides the perfect foil for the soft pastel coloured blooms – white petals blushed lilac pink. The dark stems also show off the pink flower buds well. My flowers fade to lilac as the blooms age, but are certainly more pink when they first appear.
Flowers from July-October and, like all phlox, flowers best in part shade and retentive soil.
I deadhead mine to promote more flowers in the autumn. I cut down the whole plant to just above soil level at the end of winter and mulch the ground around it to help keep the soil moist.
Found as a seedling in Hampshire by Monica Lynden-Bell, around 1970, who subsequently went on to win many a flower show with her namesake.
